The How I Learned Series features writers, storytellers, comedians, and other raconteurs holding forth on a different theme. It all happens every last Wednesday of the month, and sometimes more than that, which basically means you will have the best night of your life on those nights, repeatedly.

RACHEL SHERMAN's first book, The First Hurt, was short-listed for the Story Prize and the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, and was named one of the 25 books to remember in 2006 by the New York Public Library. The New York Times Book Review called her most recent novel, The Living Room, "perfectly paced." She teaches writing at Rutgers and Columbia, and she lives in Brooklyn.

PAUL FORD is a writer and nerd who lives in Brooklyn. He published the novel Gary Benchley, Rock Star in 2005, used to be an editor at Harper's Magazine, and has a blog he doesn't update very often called Ftrain.com.

If Flight of the Conchords and Zach Galifianakis had a lovechild with David Sedaris, it would be BEN LERMAN. He has appeared on Logo TV and Here! TV, and he is a regular contributor on SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Ben was just nominated for an Excellence in Comedy in New York Award for Best Musical Comedy Act. His debut music video landed him in the "Lowbrow/Brilliant" quadrant of the New York Magazine Approval Matrix. Check it out at benlerman.net.

MICHELE CARLO is a writer/performer who has lived in four of the five boroughs of NYC and remembers when a slice of pizza cost fifty cents. She has been published in Thomas Beller's Lost & Found: Stories from New York and SMITH magazine. She has told her stories everywhere a person can tell stories in New York--including The Moth's GrandSLAM and Mainstage and the PEN American Center World Voices Festival. Her memoir Fish Out Of Agua was published by Citadel Press in 2010. Visit michelecarlo.com

SHAWN HOLLENBACH is a stand up comedian, actor, and the gay next door. He is the producer of Closet Cases, a Critics' Pick in Time Out NY and a Homo Must in HX Magazine. You may have seen him on VH1 or Gayest Week Ever or Hot Gay Comics. He is the creator and co-producer of the Miss Fag Hag Pageant featuring such talents as Caroline Rhea, John Cameron Mitchell, Michael Musto, and Hedda Lettuce. Shawn is also a contributing writer for 365gay.com.
