Since 2009, How I Learned has featured some of the best live storytelling, comedy, and readings in New York City. It all happens a couple of times a year, and sometimes more than that, which basically means you'll have the best night of you life on those nights, repeatedly.

Linda Lovelace, Tighty-Whiteys, and Pedophilia (WHAT?)

Friday, October 5th, 2012

Well, it was a real mix of funny/sad stories at How I Learned That Was Then This Is Now last month. It makes sense. There's been something in the air. Have you noticed? It has something to do with full moons and new moons and stuff. For real. Before you go reading your monthly forecast (I recommend Susan Miller, by the way) or your weekly horoscope (Rob Brezsny, naturally), here are some photos from September's show courtesy of Jesse Chan-Norris.

JEFFERSON, curator and host of Bare! True Stories of Sex, Desire and Romance, and winner of the inaugural How I Learned story slam, Storytimes, recalls watching Deep Throat on VHS... with his dad. Oh, and also getting to meet Linda Lovelace. No big.

Comedian, writer, and musician, LANE MOORE, reminds us that as bad as things might get, everything passes. (Seriously? Thank God.) She grew up across the hall from a pedophile. So, you know. SHE KNOWS.

JIM O'GRADY, a 10-time Moth StorySLAM champ and a reporter for WNYC, tells a bizarre true story, set in Bayonne, about a local Shaman and a mysterious drowning man. This shit only happens in New Jersey.

Another Moth heavy-hitter, STEVE ZIMMER, regales us with a suburban tale of peer pressure and disguising yourself by wearing a pair of tighty-whiteys on your head. It happens.

Stand-up comic DAN ST. GERMAIN talks about getting sober, not being sober at all, losing the love of his life, and what life is like now. Whoa.

Thank you, as always, to everyone who came out to the show, and to our intrepid performers. NEXT UP: How I Learned To Keep A Secret on October 24th! Details coming right up...
