Wow. I’m sitting here bawling my eyes out because I witnessed those years and I know how very much you all loved Cora. I can still see her sweet face - see her at the lake, walking blanket to blanket, searching for snacks. I was always happy to share just to see her smile. Thank you for sharing your story. So many of us are simply surviving, but not really living. What an amazing gift Cora shared with you. Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us.❤️
How did I miss this earlier. It's early morning as I read this and my heart is filled with grief and hope and the thought that pain and joy can coexist. Beautifully written. Beautifully felt. Thank you for writing this. And thank you, How I Learned, for publishing this. Brilliantly gutting. Exquisitely hopeful.
Thank you, Patrick; I appreciate your kind words! Given the time that’s elapsed since I wrote this (and lived it!), I appreciate the ever-timely reminder that pain and joy can absolutely coexist. Be well.
Such a beautiful and heart-wrenching essay. I'm so glad that you were all able to find your paths through the pain. Also loved the connections you drew to the Game of Life ;).
Thank you, Gina! When the idea to connect my story to the board game struck me, I knew I had to write the essay. So glad the concept resonated with you.
